I've seen many dark visions of the future...
« on: August 08, 2011, 07:21:11 AM BST GMT »
... through the medium of film.  I've seen a self-aware computer send it's cyborg minions to terminate the remnants of humanity.  I've seen apes rule over a blasted wasteland of a planet.  I've seen bounty hunters pursue replicants through the population- and pollution-choked streets of Los Angeles (and C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate).  I've seen a starving society process the last possible food source into an unrecognisable green paste.  I've seen the world overrun by different forms of mindless once-humans.  I've seen many others.

But none of these dystopias made my hair stand on end as much as the one I saw two nights ago.

Idiocracy.

I was in a sorrowful state whilst watching that on saturday night, I'd just come down with food poisoning so was in a delirious state to begin with. Highly amusing it was.

Anyway, I thought it best reflected the world we live in now...  :?

If you want to dive back into near future fictional dystopias to cure you of the real world take a look at the work of Peter Watts over at his website:
http://www.rifters.com/
You can download free pdfs of all his work from there and nice extras like his faux scientific lecture on vampires. For those of you who like the sci in your fi to be evolutionary biology :)
Warning though he's not a particularly cheerful writer :)

I agree one of the best reflections of our world. It was made by Mike Judge, the same guy that did Beavis and Butt-head, imo one of the best sociocritical series ever.

Idiocracy is one of the most probable futures I see for mankind, this...or extinction.
