latest completed sculpt
« on: May 16, 2011, 03:56:37 PM BST GMT »
This one has been printed 32mm tall and will be released soon.  she was a hard sculpt because she had to be half dead and half alive..

created in zbrush and blender, texture painting in zbrush..  printed on Envisiontec ultra.

it is a render..  I dont have a good camera for pics of the actual print or resultant cast sadly.  though no detail has been lost in production.

there is a comparisson between print and product here http://www.terragnosis.co.uk/comparisson.shtml but its a different product we created using the same system.

Yeah but it's 54mm. Take some shots of the finished product, renders always look different imo. Would like to know if the printers are good enough now to print whole minis in this little scale without having the usual steps in them.

there are no steps...  but you have to use a hi def printer... and yes that one is a 54mm, and the image is severely enlarged, but look closer, even on that enlarged image do you see any steps, if not, why would you get them at 32mm? its the same printer?

either way i dont have a camera that would take a good enough pic for comparison.

The machine is the Envisiontec Ultra..  here is a link http://www.envisiontec.de/index.php?id=112
they cost about 47k sadly, thats GBP.. but there are quite a few out there being used.  if you contact envisiontec they will put you in touch with the nearest person to your location, they will even recommend people who specialise in figures and organic shaped objects.  Nice guys...

When I next see Steve Ill see if he can take some images of the print.  There are no steps on it at all, incredible detail rendering.

if you need help preping a file for print just shout, I might be able to save you a good deal of time and possibly money with a few simple tips.

The files are done and just have to be converted into STL files now. This is the next thing to do with them and then I'd say they can be printed. I did a test a while back and used a company with a wax plottting machine, was quite good for anorganic stuff but there were little steps even if minimal they were still there. Would be great if those new printers would solve this issue.

some things to take into account.

your file should be below 300mb which means about 250-350,000 polys
the model should be a single shell and watertight.

if you need to check your file for bad edges etc you can download meshlab which has a free lite version for checking files.  if it needs a fix the free version does a basic fix, but then you can give the "fixed" file to materialise for a final fix up, they run an stl fix service which is 99% of the time free, and even a complex fix is usually less than 15 Euros.  Ill dig out some links if you want them.

also if you would like to see one of the prints I can send you a 28mm sample... a broken one we have made a master from, they usually break when taken from the mold as the heat makes them brittle. just drop me a note with your addy and Ill stick one in the post.
