Problems with polymer clay; clay is too thick for my 28mm armatures

I should probably ask Kev White since I know for a fact that he works with  Beesputty and does just fine, but since I'm here..
My problem is that when I try to apply polymer clay (Fimo or BeesPutty) to a "female" armature coated with Greenstuff, it creates too much bulk and I don't know how to make it thinner.
Perhaps I should try white spirit or turpentine substitute?

In frustration I took all the putty off of the armature I was making, but I'll make another to show how it goes wrong. I can sculpt the legs okay, but the chest, neck, hips and butt all go badly wrong.
